Year-End Reflections and New Year's Prompts for Neurodivergent Young Adults

gifted & talented journal prompts neurodivergence reflection questions seasonal Dec 26, 2024

The end of the year can be both a reflective and emotionally intense time, especially for those of us navigating life with neurodivergence or mental health challenges. It’s a period where we might feel pressure to 'measure up' to societal expectations or compare our past year to others', which can sometimes overshadow the small but meaningful growth we’ve made. But it doesn’t have to be that way—reflection can be a kind, supportive practice that honors our lived experience, adapts to our unique insights, and fuels self-compassion for the road ahead.

Here are some thoughtful prompts designed to guide you, as a neurodivergent, gifted, or mental-health-sensitive individual, toward a more personal and affirming year-end reflection:

Reflecting on the Past Year

  1. What brought you moments of joy or comfort, no matter how small or fleeting?

This could be a sensory experience, a connection with someone who 'gets' you, or simply finding a new hobby or interest.

  1. What are some wins or progress you can celebrate, even if they felt ‘small’ or unnoticed by others?

Neurodivergence often means growth doesn’t fit into neat timelines, so honor your unique path here.

  1. Were there any moments where you stood up for yourself, honored your boundaries, or advocated for your needs?

Advocacy—whether with others or within yourself—is a powerful achievement.

  1. What have you learned about yourself this year?

Think about how new experiences, challenges, or routines helped you understand more about your strengths and needs.

Setting Intentions for the New Year

  1. What would you like to feel more of this year (peace, curiosity, pride, etc.)?

Think beyond external 'goals'—focus on emotional states or internal growth.

  1. How can you honor your neurodivergence or mental health needs more authentically in the year to come?

Maybe it's adjusting routines, finding a better work-life balance, or even just handling transitions in a way that suits you.

  1. Are there one or two coping strategies or wellness practices you'd like to build into your life (or revisit)?

Start small and realistic—a simple yet steady practice can bring enduring benefits.

  1. What would help you feel grounded or safe in difficult moments?

Reflect on tools, people, or spaces that can remind you of your resilience when times get tough.

  1. How can you be kinder to yourself in this coming year?

Ask yourself what it would look like to move through 2025 with greater self-compassion and understanding.

Moving Forward with Grace and Patience

Remember, you don’t have to fit into society’s narrow ideas about achievement or milestones. It’s okay to redefine success on your own terms, adapting your goals to respect both your neurodiversity and mental health. The act of reflection and intention-setting isn’t about control or fixing yourself—it’s about self-awareness and nurturing the parts of you that often go unheard.

Take these prompts at your own pace, perhaps with a journal, voice recording, or a trusted friend. Ending and beginning a year isn’t about perfection; it’s about making space for your humanity. Wherever you’re at right now, that’s enough. Here's to a year filled with moments of growth, rest, and authenticity.
